Knitty D and the City

Episode 15 - Better Late Than Never

January 2, 2007 4:23 pm

Hopefully, the title says it all - I’m really really sorry for making everyone wait so long - and thanks so much to Knitty D for being so patient.  Without getting too maudlin, December sucked.  But, it’s a New Year, my head is back in the right place (in my knitting bag), and both Knitty D and I are excited about the New Year.

So, in this belated, and a little dated, episode, we have the long promised interview with Mel Clark, from Knit2Together.  We review Cables Untangled, Victorian Lace Today, and Knitting for Peace - plus a few other things we just threw in for the hell of it.  We revisit (cough cough . . . we really did record these bits in October at Stitches) Stitches East, chat with Kasey from Bloon Moon Fiber Arts, and push the sock club, which is, er, closed, I think.  Um, better late than never . . .

We also did our year in review — which I think will now be in preparation for our very own Knitting Oscars, the Golden Needles.  So, please please please let us know your thoughts on the best and worst of knitting 2006.  “Voting” or commenting will be open until March, a la the Oscars, and we promise that that episode will be timely.

I’ve cleaned up the message boards, and I promise, I’ll never let the website go the way of Mrs. Havesham’s house (don’t worry, December was not nearly as bleak as Dickens)!

Hope everyone had a happy holidays, and its so good to be back!

Episode 14 - Rockin Rhinebeck!

October 30, 2006 8:48 pm

Socks that Rock

The Socks rocked and so did Rhinebeck!  In Episode 14, we interview Shannon Okey, author of the oh-so-helpful Spin to Knit, and then - we’re on the road again - off to Rhinebeck! Along the way we had water packaged to go, maybe met a ghost, fell in love with an Alpaca, and of course, bought lots o’ yarn! Thanks so much to everyone who stopped us and said hello - you so made us feel like rock stars!  Show notes are on their way, and check back in a couple of days, and I’ll have updated our Meet the Designers page, so that you can learn more about Shannon, and her partner in crime, Kim Werker, author of Get Hooked.

And, be sure to visit Knitty D and I at Stitches East in Baltimore, MD this Sunday.  We’ll be camping out at the Rosie’s Yarn Celllar Booth, surrounded by Koigu and Anne — stop by around 11:00 a.m., say hi, and be on the podcast!

We can’t wait to see you there!

YARNPLAY!!

yarnplay.bmp

Coming Soon to a Blog Near You!

Ayarnplaybook.jpgs you can see, my blog is stop number 3 on the tour, on Tuesday, October 24th. I’ll be knitting Poppy, the v-neck sweater on the cover of the book.  Without giving too much away, my Poppy is in a completely different colorway, and is, hmm, nearly complete (and you thought I was just sitting around fretting about Maude!). Stop by on Tuesday for perhaps the finished sweater (I don’t know - Rhinebeck may prevent that!), and tips on picking your yarn, and knitting the pattern. And be sure to pop by all of the stops on the tour, no ticket necessary for admission (cheaper than Barbra Streisand tickets, and no one will tell you to shut the f- up!) - it’s going to be a great show!

AND THERE’S MORE!!

262335739_9eafbd17de_m.jpgAnd, be sure to check out Travels With SwatchyTravels With Swatchy is a blog project that uses knitting as an instrument to raise awareness of CFIDS (Chronic Fatigue and Immune Dysfunction Syndrome). Knittah, co-founder of the blog, is disabled and homebound as a result of CFIDS. She sends her knitting out into the world with the help of Noricum, who came up with the idea and co-founded the blog. Noricum will carry Swatchy on her travels, and post photographs to the Travels with Swatchy blog. Through Swatchy, Knittah will be able to experience wool festivals and other far-flung places that she cannot visit in person. Swatchy travels with the dual mission of having fun and raising awareness of CFIDS, a serious illness that affects more than one million people in the United States alone. Visit Travels with Swatchy to see where Swatchy goes next and learn more about CFIDS.  And, for more info, click here

October 9, 2006 7:59 pm

brandonbook.jpgCan you believe it - 2 episodes in two weeks!!!!  Get your second dose of Knitty D and the City with Episode 13, Get Your Color on With Brandon Mably.

Brandon sat down with me at Rosie’s Yarn Cellar for a chat about his new book, his classroom methodology, and his love of color and knitting.  His new book, Knitting Color is available at your local book stores, and of course, on Amazon.com.  The book is a visual delight, a vertible color-ogue of Brandon’s travels over the last 16 years.  We hope you enjoy the interview as much as I enjoyed recording it.  Check out our Meet the Designers page so that you can learn more about Brandon’s work, and where to find him as he criss -crosses the country on his color tour!

And of course, show notes to come soon from Knitty D!

Maude-A-Long Underway

October 7, 2006 10:09 am

maude1.jpgThe talk is over, and the knitting has begun!  Please please please knit Maude with us.  It’s a really fabulous pattern, and the finished shawl is truly beautiful.

I’ve started Maude in an awesome blue colorway (after getting over the loss of P824, dye lot 50), and Knitty D has her yarn.

maudebanner2.png

So, join us at www.knitmaude.blogspot.com, and we’ll be happy to help everyone with any tough spots in the pattern!  I’m well underway, love it, and can’t wait to see everyone else’s Maude - so get cast on.

WARNING:  If you do choose to use the suggested yarn in the pattern, Koigu, and have never used it before, it can be addictive.  Knitty D and I do not accept any responsibilty for the side affects caused by this addiction - possible side affects include, waking at the crack-o-dawn to be first in line to get into the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival to hit the Koigu mill end tent, bribing store employees at your LYS to give you the heads up when a Koigu shipment is expected, and a significant dent to your bank account.  But, you’ve been warned, and Knitty D and I cannot be held liable for any addiction that should occur!

Episode 12 - New Site, New Sound, Old Knitty D

October 3, 2006 8:00 pm

Welcome to our new home!  Come, sit, stay, put your feet up - go ahead, on the couch, on the coffee table, wherever, get out your sticks, and knit awhile.

As I said about 50 billion times in this new episode, this site is a work in progress.  Hopefully, it will supplement the podcast in a meaningful way (at least as meaningful as cuddling up to a skein of Koigu).  I have big ideas, but, alas, that darn thing called a job, so it will be a slow process, but hopefully you will all stick around, and bear with us!

Check out our new sections, Meet the Designers and Knitting Resources and please please go on over to the message boards for a bit of chit chat. As soon as I figure out ZenCart, our Knitty D and the City’s Mom & Pop Stitchmarker Corner Store will be open for business.

This week, we learned all about pests-mice-that DON’T eat wool…clean out that knitting bag Wendy!

We are getting our knit on and de-stashing madly in preparation for Rhinebeck.

We have also been fairly monogamous to knitting projects lately…Wendy to Sarcelle (see her blog for photos) and Knitty D to the Half-Pi Shawl and the twin hats…

Don’t forget to sign up now for the MAUDE-A-LONG—just 5 skeins of KPPPM (koigu)and the pattern are what you need for this all new knit a long. Check out the blog at: (INSERT LINK HERE) and you will find links to purchase the pattern. Wendy has already started and is “proof-knitting” the pattern as she goes along.

I just realized that I didn’t put Maude on my knitting to do list…CRAP!

Don’t forget our new webpage and message boards can be found here

Wendy did two great interviews with Miriam Felton and Lisa Siobhan Mason. We learned lots about inspiration, having fun and playing with yarn.

We reviewed “Yarn Play,” by Tracy Ullman and Mel Carter…we even sang Tracy’s top 40 hit, “They don’t know about us…” The book, again, is all about having FUN with knitting and I think backs up my mantra, “knitting is a hobby, not a competition.”

You can get the book at your local yarn shop, Barnes and Noble or Amazon.com

Leave us ODIO comments! We love to hear your voices as much as you love to listen to ours!

We have lots of stuff coming up soon that we are so excited about!

Wendy met and interviewed Brandon Mably, colorwork prince and interviewed some participants of the workshop given at Rosie’s Yarn Cellar last week.

We also have interviews coming up with Spin to Knit’s Shannon Okey, and her Knit Grll partner in crime, Kim Okey.

Finally, come meet us at the Rosie’s Yarn Cellar booth at Stitches East on Sunday November 5th. We are still working out a time, but we will post updates here.

Keep on knitting and listening

And don’t forget to post on the message boards!!!
